Often coined "Indian saffron" turmeric is derived when the root of the Curcuma longa plant is ground. It has been used as a dye, but for most of us, we associate this yellow colored powder as a spice that is used in our favorite curry dishes.

In addition to having a great flavor, the turmeric medicinal uses are also something to take note of. While the medicinal properties may be fairly new to most of us, Asian countries have been using this plant for many years to treat a variety of symptoms.

Some of the turmeric medicinal uses that are common amongst the Asian culture are that it is often used to help relieve and treat the common cold and asthma. When it is mixed with water to create a paste, it can also be used as an ointment to help insect bites, scabies, boils and even bruises.

In addition, turmeric medicinal uses don't stop there. Turmeric, when given orally, can be used for many different conditions, some of which are: diarrhea, jaundice, menstrual pain and discomfort, bleeding, respiratory tract infections and even epilepsy.

In recent years, it has also been cited as being a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, and even cited to help with the prevention of certain cancers and help prevent cardiovascular disease. So in addition to tasting great, this herbal powerhouse also has amazing health benefits.
