Think Dried Fruits Are Good For You? Think Again – Sulfites Might Be Hurting You and Your Children
You think you are being healthy by eating dried fruit, right? Guess again. Sulfites can be very dangerous.
What are sulfites? A lot of dried fruit contains a "sulfer-based conservative" … which if sensitive to sulfite, can do a lot of damage to ones body. Some people may not get a reaction until they have reached their forties or fifties. In other words, it can happen at any time during ones life.
The reactions one can get due to sulfite sensitivity include: skin problems, gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular complications and pulmonary problems and fatigue. Sulfur preservatives initially were used by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians to preserve wine. Back then, they considered them safe. However, over the years, many people have gotten reactions to them.
Here are some other innocent sounding foods that the FDA claims may have sulfides in them … vegetable juice … trail mixes … canned, bottled or frozen fruit juices … instant soup mixtures … dried soup mixes .. . maple syrup .. shredded coconut … salad dressing mixes … wine vinegar … flour tortillas … fresh or frozen shrimp … gelatin … cornstarch … sauerkraut … bottled lemon juice .. to name just some. The good news is that in 1986, the FDA banned use of sulfites on fresh fruits and vegetables. If you want to know if you might be allergic to sulfites, one way to find out is to eat one of the foods listed above (or drink) (obviously, do not eat or drink too much), as noted by the product label , and see if within an hour, you start coughing get headaches, become tired, start itching, or see any redness of your skin.
So make sure you check your labels on your food and drinks. Make sure they do not contain "sulfites".
